Book of the Week #12

|

Sayaka Murata is an author I have previously enjoyed, primarily due to her quirky way of writing, as well as imbuing some black humour into the story. For that reason, I have kept Life Ceremony in mind since I want to enjoy more of the author’s simple, but amusing, way of writing.

Unlike the last work I read, Life Ceremony is not a novel. Instead, it is a collection of thirteen pieces of short fiction, all of which (according to online reviews) seem to brim with absurdity and a defiance of norms or logic. This excites me quite a bit, as I make it no secret that I enjoy the particularly odd minds of select Japanese authors.

Overall, Murata’s collection of short stories seems to be the sort of thing you can get through in one day, and be simultaneously confused and amused by the subject matter and plot of each work within. I will definitely seek out a copy sometime, and I think you should too.
