Book of the Week #18

|

Everyone, especially Brits, like a good bit of dry humour and cynicism. Nothing seems to universally inspire a sense of cynicism quite like thinking about the state of the climate and how damned as a species we are.

This makes McEwan’s satiric Solar — a novel about a jaded Nobel Prize physicist who pursues a solar-based solution for climate change — a fitting read for those feeling down in the dumps with our impending death via heat stroke, flooding, earthquakes, and more.

In my experience, novels and publications that intentionally try to be funny or amusing can be hit or miss. Yet, Solar’s favourable reviews and praise for its humour make me optimistic that it sticks the comedic landing most of the time.

I think it could be worth checking out, especially if you have any strong opinions about climate change and solar energy.
