I must confess that this book lured me in with this particularly pretty cover, but the content of Night Train to the Stars is rather fantastical.
Although the compilation bears the name of Miyazawa’s best-known Night Train to the Stars, this whole book is full of the author’s Japanese fairy tales. In particular, these fairy tales seem to be more of the Grimm Fable sort, where their darker aspects are the allure, not wholesomeness or resolution.
Assuming you aren’t a parent or look after small children, can you recall the last time you read a fairy tale? For me, it must be close enough to a decade and a half, and that’s something I want to change with Miyazawa’s rather intriguing collection.
Perhaps you should consider doing the same and check out this newly put together compilation of short, whimsical, but somewhat dark, stories.
