Cutesy, feel-good novels aren’t something I often seek out, but I’m also not opposed to occasionally indulging in some pleasant reading material. So, novels like The Door-To-Door Bookstore don’t often appear on my reading radar.
Carsten Henn’s bestseller is set in a small German town, focusing on a book delivery man called Carl and a nine-year-old girl whom he befriends. Seemingly, the story relates to Carl losing his job—simultaneously ending the loose friendship he has with the customers he delivers to—requiring him to find a way to rebuild his bond with these customers.
It seems a little contrived, as though the blurb is trying very hard not to spoil something. Still, it seems to be a novel focused on books, friendship, and, as millennials say, ‘positive vibes’. Worth looking into if you’re a consumer of such laid-back, low stakes literature.
