A novel with a tacky, uniquely garish cover, Days & Days & Days explores the souring life of a thirty-nine-year-old reality television star called Bibbs. If you are confused about the odd name, the story is set in Sweden.
Out of nowhere, Bibbs’ boyfriend dumps her, removing a pillar of stability and support in her life; her flat is also on the line. Rocked by this sudden shift in her life, Bibbs has to scrape up 100,000 Krona within a week—a hard feat for someone who is well past their prime for the limelight and stardom she once enjoyed.
Naturally, the story will toy around with the destruction and unravelling of one’s life, the hard choices that have to be made to survive, and the pressure of a short, but very significant, deadline. Additionally, on a personal note, I enjoy the focus on a (former) celebrity in a more niche subsection of television. It is not a protagonist I would typically gravitate towards, so I am curious about how the author will portray Bibbs.
Whilst Schunnesson’s novel would be a go-to work for me, its bizarre cover and simplistic, rather modern premise, drew me in. I might give it a read some day, and perhaps you should check it out if you feel so inclined.
