Reading in the Summer

|

Summer is the time when you’re supposed to be outdoors, enjoying the world and generally not being cooped up indoors. But we can’t all be outside 24/7, so I think it is best to utilise the long evenings and downtime of summer to get some reading in.

Depending on where you live, summer is a blessing and a curse for reading. Those who live in built-up areas, particularly cities or places nearby to summer attractions (like beaches and recreational establishments), might find summer to be hellish for their reading. All those people, and all that noise.

For country bumpkins, or those who simply don’t get affected much by the hustle and bustle of summer, it can be lovely. Long days with lots of light, where morning bleeds so slowly into afternoon, then evenings, that the hours can pass by almost unnoticed. It’s perfect for total escapism, if you can achieve it.

Two downsides are the heat and the insects, particularly those who flit around and annoy you. Where I live is rather rural, and we aren’t used to heat, so summer can really exhaust me (especially when opening windows means flies, bees, and whatever else are prone to inviting themselves in). This is obviously more of a personal issue, but nobody likes being too warm, and we certainly don’t like little pests loudly buzzing around our house when we are trying to immerse ourselves in a book.

Overall, I think summer is a great time to read, especially when you have no plans and are still of an age/position where summer holidays are a thing. If you get tired of reading, summer is the best time to go out and do something else, and let the books wait for you to return. Just make sure to stay hydrated!
