I’ve heard a lot about Yellowface, and considering it recently got a paperback release, I think now is the time to draw some attention to the few of you that may not have heard about it at all.
The story follows June, who steals the the freshly finished manuscript of a recently dead friend and stakes claim to this novel focusing on Chinese labourers during World War I. From there, the entire story circulates this stolen fame and June’s extensive efforts to not be caught out as a thief.
Kuang’s novel, therefore, is a cynical take on authors and the literary world as a whole. Although I won’t know until I have read the book, I feel there may also be some vague commentaries on race or culture strewn throughout.
It’s an interesting premise, for sure, and it’s a book I keep almost purchasing and then deciding not to. Someday, I’ll give it a read, and I think you should as well.
