Sally Rooney is an author who has grown on me, and is probably one of Ireland’s best standouts of the modern literary world.
Her fourth novel, Intermezzo is set in Dublin and rural Ireland, following brothers Peter and Ivan Koubek. The former is the eldest and a lawyer, the latter in his twenties competing in chess competitions; both bereaved after the passing of their father.
In typical Rooney fashion, this work has a focus on grief and relationships. Peter is juggling two relationships, and Ivan is becoming involved with an older woman who has her own share of grief and troubles. As you and I can both imagine, this novel is bound to get emotional and messy.
I definitely look forward to giving it a read. After the guttural brilliance of Normal People, I’d basically recommend any of Rooney’s publications without hesitation.
